At the beginning of the Lotus Sutra (Burton Watson translation) the story opens with many beings attending a great gathering with the Buddha. Included in the vast audience are mystical mythological beings called Yakshas and Garudas. The Lotus Sutra does not offer a description of what they look like. In researching these beings I have found that Yakshas are a kind of demon or troll, and Garudas are fierce humaniod bird creatures.
