Yaksha Prince Great Mystery Holder

At the beginning of the Lotus Sutra (Burton Watson translation) the story opens with many beings attending a great gathering with the Buddha. Included in the vast audience are mystical mythological beings called Yakshas and Garudas. The Lotus Sutra does not offer a description of what they look like. In researching these beings I have found that Yakshas are a kind of demon or troll, and Garudas are fierce humaniod bird creatures.

Painting with acrylic colors including metallic silver and gold on linen. 30 x 24 inches. The picture includes a full inscription and an offering of 3 wooden Karma Coins. This is an APTOTROPAIC painting, meaning “having the power to prevent evil or bad luck”. This type of art was quite common in ancient times.
