“Three Natives” 1981, Acrylic on wood panel with attached painted frame. 30 x 78. Collection of the artist.
Three Natives was painted while the artist was still attending art school at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. It hung in the student advisors office for several months, before being sold directly from the artist’s studio in 1981. For 18 years it was displayed it the collectors home until he died, and when the estate was sold, the work was purchased by the artist. This rare work is an amazing example of Rodney’s growing confidence as a 21 year old. It has never been show commercially.
Each one of the three figures holds a different object on a tray. The pineapple and the TV are recognizable, but the central object is not. Maybe art, abstraction, a glimmer of thought or that which cannot be defined.
